Non Chemical Hair Relaxers
Now more than ever, people are more conscious about what they put into (and on) their bodies. Over the past couple decades we have seen trend that has shifted away from man made chemicals and substances, towards more natural and organic solutions. So are non chemical hair relaxers the best alternative? Let’s find out…
What are non chemical hair relaxers?
Technically, the name “non chemical hair relaxers” is really not accurate. Why? Because when you think about it, the word “chemical” basically refers to formulations that are man-made. Some chemicals are good, some are bad. But the bottom line is they are in all kinds of things, even most foods.
So there really is no such thing as a non chemical hair relaxer. However, there are some that use stronger, more abrasive chemicals, and others that use gentler and natural ingredients. Basically, hair relaxers fall under two categories:
Lye-Based Relaxer: This is the traditional relaxer that your mom and grandma might have grown up using. Still to this day, it is the most commonly used relaxer in salons. Why? Because it is very strong and therefore effective. However, as you probably know too well, there are many drawbacks associated with lye; chemical burns, potential hair loss, and more if not done right.
No Lye Relaxer: When people say they want a non chemical hair relaxer, this is probably what they are talking about… one that doesn’t use lye. Up until very recently, there weren’t any lye-free alternatives that were effective. However recently, a few exciting hair relaxers have came out which are lye free and they still do an excellent job for many people.
Three Important Tips For Picking Out a Non-Lye Hair Relaxer:
1. It’s okay if you don’t look like the person on the box!
Often times, we look for hair care products with pictures of people that look like us. Although this can be helpful, it’s important to understand that’s only advertising. Just because that’s their target customer, it doesn’t mean that’s the only person that can use it. Males can use female hair products. African American hair care works great for many people with curly hair. So don’t just a product by the box’s picture.
2. Don’t buy one that’s too strong
Unless you are a professionally trained and certified hair stylist, we can’t recommend that you use products labeled for professional use only. There’s good reason for this too – you need to know what you’re doing when it comes to relaxing your hair. If it’s your first time, it’s always better to start out with a gentler formulation that is made for regular consumers.
3. Buy online for better selection and pricing
The reason I founded HairRelaxers.net was because I was sick and tired of not being able to find the products I needed at stores. Even in Los Angeles, which is where I live, professional beauty supply stores had very limited selections; rarely having the one I was looking for. To make matters worse, their prices were outrageous. That’s why I started this online store, which today is the online leader in hair relaxers.
